A study conducted by Journal of Sleep Research & Sleep Medicine found that test subjects in one study who slept for eight hours for three nights, four hours for the next six nights, and then were allowed a recovery period of 12 hours of sleep for the following week demonstrated that at the peak of their sleep debt they took 40% longer than normal to respond and regulate blood-glucose levels following a carbohydrate-rich meal. This may explain why after a late night and little sleep you find yourself constantly hungry despite having eaten a meal.

So if you’ve ever wondered why you eat more when you’re sleep deprived, you’ll know its because your body is failing to regulate your blood levels. What also happens is that lack of sleep also increases the thyroid hormone which regulates how many calories you burn (the more thyroid, the less calories you can burn) in other words, the lower your metabolism.
